CHAPTER SIX

ARGUMENTATIVE SPIRIT—

Trans-generational Curses

In psychology we call it “measured effects.” Can we begin to calculate the effects of having an argumentative spirit? As a child, I met my grandfather Cuthbertson just once. I remember how angry he seemed. My response was to pull back from him. My father had an argumentative spirit. But Dad, God blessed him as he got older and this subsided. He died at ninety-three.

The effects of an argumentative spirit run deep. The question does arise, “Are we coded by God transgenerationally?” Psalms 139 in relating how God “fashioned” us in our mother’s womb states that while we were being formed that our “days are numbered.” Second Timothy 1:9 relates that “God saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given in Christ Jesus, before the foundation of the earth”? The most profound thought that we can think is how God sees before us. Let’s believe that God has purposes that he wants to accomplish through this book. Let’s believe that he saw you changing through the reading of this book, before you were born. Wow. Getting excited yet?

Let’s consider some of the transgenerational effects of an argumentative spirit. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 relates, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessings, and cursing; therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. That thou mayest love the Lord, thy God, and that thou mayest obey His voice, and thou mayest cleave unto Him; for He is life, and the length of thy days, that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.” Note that the Lord gives both blessings and curses. Note that “blessings and curses” can be transgenerational… both thou and thy seed may live….” In 1 Corinthians 11:29-30 is the warning of taking communion “unworthily.” The Scriptures states, “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.” What a thought! Could there possibly be a correlation between a person’s sickness and his taking the Lord’s Supper “unworthily”? And who is keeping these records? Well, God is, of course. Let’s not forget that Galatians 6:7 warns us to “Be not deceived. God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. For he that sowsto his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that sowsto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” Grasping this is beyond understanding. God is keeping elaborate records.

The best sermon that I ever heard preached in my life was preached by Dr. Stuart Briscoe. His thoughts were built around God’s grace, God’s mercy, and God’s justice. Praise God, we will take all the grace He wants to give us. Amen. Praise God, we will take all the mercy that He will pour upon us.
